In Llama Land, There's a One-Man Band ...

Attention Whole Foods Market (WFM) shoppers: you could be going to Peru!

The natural and organic foods giant has teamed up with Intrepid Travel to launch "The Prosperity Campaign," a five-week fundraising drive to fund micro-lending projects in poor communities around the world.

Just stop into your local WFM, become a donor before March 31, and you’ll automatically be entered to win an all-expenses trip for two to Peru. If there’s not a WFM in your ‘hood, click
here to enter online (no purchase necessary).

During your 10-day/9-night South American adventure, you’ll be whisked through mountains and jungles, valleys and beaches, eventually working your way from Lima to Machu Picchu. When you’re not enjoying the breathtaking scenery, you’ll get to hobnob with some of
WF Foundation’s dedicated microcredit clients and partners in the area, and see firsthand how your donation helps alleviate poverty worldwide.

Aisle Do

When will the flash sale fever ever end? According to my recent posts, not anytime in the foreseeable future. With the recent launch of TheAisleNewYork.com, brides-to-be can jump on the savings bandwagon for their dream day attire (which can literally add up to thousands of dollars!) and contribute to charity while doing so.

The members-only
Web site offers up to 50 percent off everything a blushing bride needs for her once in a lifetime event: exclusive gowns, shoes, jewelry, veils, and bags from designers including Amsale, Oscar de la Renta, Monique Lhullier and Marchesa.

To sweeten the deal, The Aisle donates two percent of each sale price to a charity chosen by the designer. So far they’ve lined up cool charitable organizations like
P.S. Arts, Aid for AIDS International, The Edible Schoolyard, Hope for Depression and St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

If shopping for your dream dress via the Internet makes you a wee bit nervous (to say the least), rest assured, the site is run by fashion/wedding pros including Shara Levy, a lawyer-turned-unofficial wedding planner, David Yassky, a former bridal editor for WWD, Deborah Moses, a former bridal magazine editor-in-chief, and Mark Ingram, a bridal atelier owner. With over 15,000 bridal fans signed up so far, they just might be on to something.

Alfresco Lovin'

As usual, the National Park Service is pushing the boundaries of decency with its latest press release. Must be all that fresh air - those guys are on the edge. My spam filter just melted. Anyway, I give you, in unedited form, the first para of their Valentine's Day promotion:

“As Valentine's Day approaches, many strive to plan romantic activities or getaways. This year, instead of the traditional gift of chocolates and flowers, treat yourself and your loved one to a memorable and intimate experience in your national parks. Whether it's a destination up the road or across the country, you will find world-class vistas, scenery and activities that provide the perfect setting for an unforgettable Valentine's Day memory.”

Oh, Smokey!

Another Day, Another Deal Site (But This One’s Different!)

It seems like only yesterday that I was writing about a new deal site, but, rest assured, this source of big-hearted bargains is a little different.

Ideal Network - not to be confused with Ideeli – offers subscribers deep discounts on local merchants and donates a portion of proceeds (20-25 percent of the purchase price) to support a charity campaign of your choosing. Once you join - for free – you can save a bit of cash, support your favorite neighborhood businesses and give back to charities including Habitat for Humanity, Susan G. Komen for the Cure, One Day’s Wages and The Just Garden Project.

Click
here to get with the Ideal Network right now – that is, if you’re lucky enough to live in Seattle; otherwise “It’s Coming Soon."

IHOP To It

How about this for a deal: on Tuesday, March 1, anyone who hops into an International House of Pancakes restaurant can claim a FREE stack of buttermilk pancakes. The only thing IHOP asks in exchange is that you make a voluntary donation to the Children’s Miracle Network, a splendid national charity that supports local children's hospitals. Of course, you could just snarf down the pancakes and waddle out of there without donating a penny, but that would make you a big fat loser.

In the past five years, this one-day-only celebration has raised more than $5 million for the charity (I’m not even going to attempt to calculate how many pancakes that equates to).

This delicious deal is good on March 1 from 7:00 a.m.-10:00 p.m. at more than 1,500 hundred IHOPs across the country.

Cause for Celebration

DonorsChoose.org has come up with a brilliant way to celebrate each and every special occasion you can think of –- birthdays, anniversaries, a wedding day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Take your Kid to Work Day, TGIF days, Flag Day, Graduation day, heck, even sick days – all while helping fund cash-strapped classroom projects across the country.

The organization's new “
Celebrations” tool makes it super easy to create your very own Giving Page for whatever day you choose to celebrate. Once you’ve created the page (which I hear takes a mere 60 seconds to complete), simply pick out a few of your favorite classroom projects on the DonorsChoose Web site, and then invite your friends and family members to support these projects in lieu of gifts. Who needs another gift card or toaster anyway?
