In the Navy

Do you think your ‘hood is worthy of a special visit from Old Navy’s Funnovation Nation?  Could your town use a summer celebration filled with food, music, entertainment AND a $10,000 grant for a community improvement project?
Well, you’ve until May 6 to create a 60-second “funnovative” video explaining why your town deserves a chance to party down Old Navy style. Click here to jump on the Old Navy bandwagon.

The Power of Poetry

In honor of National Poetry Month, LitWorld is calling on all poets, rhymesters, lyricists and writers to add a line (or two) to its second annual Global Poem for Change. Sharon Creech, author of "Walk Two Moons" and "Love That Dog," began the poem with her own two rather eloquent lines and now it’s up to you to grow it.

Click here – before the end of April - to help LitWorld use the power of words to help change worlds. (That doesn’t rhyme!)

Free Parking

With spring in the air in most parts of the country (sorry, Northeast), get out there and take a hike, throw a picnic, stroll on the beach or take your pooch for a wander for FREE at any one of our nation’s 394 national parks.

Before April 29 you should avail yourself of the National Park Service’s very hospitable annual offer of free transportation entrance fees. Just be aware that you’ll still have to cover any additional costs such as camping, reservation, tours or concession fees.

Today, I’ve got some great news for thousands of cats (and kittens) living in animal shelters across the country. During its GiveLitter initiative, the good people at World’s Best Cat Litter are giving away thousands of pounds of kitty litter to 16 deserving cat rescues.

You can become a “Feline-thropist” by voting for your favorite shelter – including Rikki’s Refuge (Rapidan, VA); Passion 4 Paws (Dayville, CT); Purr-fect Companions Cat Sanctuary (Cleveland, OH) and CATS Cradle Shelter (Fargo, ND) before April 30. For every vote cast at GiveLitter.com, WBCL will donate one pound of litter (up to 100,000) to the chosen charity. Now that's cat-tastic!

Join the Crowd

There are hundreds of ways you could celebrate Earth Day this year (April 22), but how many could win a deserving charity $50,000? Only one that I’m aware of.

Groupon - the grand daddy of all deal sites - is teaming up with Edward Norton’s Crowdrise for a cool new contest to celebrate Earth Day’s big “4-0.” During the Groupon Challenge dozens of charities are competing to raise the most cash for their environmental causes. The campaign that raises the most cash before May 15 will pocket $25,000, while second and third places take home $15,000 and $10,000 respectively.

Show some green love here for some awesome charities including World Wildlife Fund, NRDC, Surfrider Foundation, Ian Somerhalder Foundation, Red Wolf Coalition, Bat World Sanctuary and Wild Baby Rescue Center.

Mr. Universe

I’ve been waiting for ages for a chance to write about the hands-down funniest comedian on the face of this Earth, Jim Gaffigan. And although I can’t promise that his new stand-up special, "Jim Gaffigan: Mr. Universe," will reach the Olympian heights of his previous work - though it probably will - I can assure you that $1 from each $5 show downloaded at jimgaffigan.com will go directly to The Bob Woodruff Foundation.

I don’t want to give too much away, but let’s just say he does a pretty convincing depressed large marine mammal. Go to the site, download his 75-minute set, pee yourself laughing for the duration, and then reflect contentedly on the help you've just given a terrific charity that supports injured veterans and their families.

Film Feast

I’m passing along news of two upcoming foodie films, both of which have a charity twist, courtesy of one of my favorite SF food blogs, Tablehopper. Share Our Strength has partnered with the Food Network for its amazing new documentary called “Hunger Hits Home.” Narrated by Jeff Bridges, the film gives viewers a first-hand look at the 16 million kids who are going hungry in America through the eyes of parents, children and others battling this crisis. Tune in this Saturday night (April 14) at 8/7C.

Next up on Earth Day (Sunday, April 22), Whole Foods Market is launching its annual Do Something Reel Film Festival with a screening of “The Apple Pushers.” The film, with narration by Edward Norton, follows five immigrant vendors as they sell fresh fruits and vegetables on the streets of some of New York's poorest neighborhoods. Catch a live screening in Austin, Boston, Detroit, Pittsburgh and San Francisco (proceeds from ticket sales go to local food-related nonprofit organizations); or click here to find out if it's playing near you.

Promising Empties

Some skincare companies recycle products from their competitors and don’t compel customers to make any purchases in order to receive a reward. Kiehl’s, on the other hand, prefers to recycle only its own brand and does ask customers to spend a few dollars ($65) - but it CAN earn you an awesome selection of Kiehl's products.

Anyway, here’s how you can participate. The first step is to get hold of a Kiehl’s Recycle and Be Rewarded program card (I got mine in the mail). Next, round up 10 empty bottles – and your reward card – and bring them to a Kiehl’s retail store to get a stamp.

Three stamps get you a lip balm (with a purchase of - gulp - $65 or more), five earn you a travel size product, and 10 land you a full-size product. This reward only lasts until May 18, so hurry up and get to the bottom of all those bottles.

Share Your Strength

I’ll make this one short and sweet. Share our Strength is searching for bakers in all 50 states to help it reach its goal of holding 500 bake sales in this year’s 3rd annual National Challenge Weekend, April 20-22. If you do the math – as I’ve done, of course – that’s just 10 bakes sales per state. Should be a cakewalk.

The drive is a key part of the No Kid Hungry Campaign to end childhood hunger in America by 2015. The initiative provides leadership, raises awareness and advocates for change that will make sure no kid in America ever goes hungry.

It doesn’t matter whether your specialty is bread, pie, pudding, muffins, cookies, cake or quiche; SOS just requires that the goods offered for sale have spent a reasonable amount of time in an oven. Click here to find templates for flyers, letters, signs, stickers, and media alerts; hundreds of delicious recipes; and pricing and photo tips to help you create the best Great American Bake Sale ever.

Spring Cleaning With Mrs. Meyers

If you’ve never had the opportunity to soap, spray, sponge, wash, or scrub with Mrs. Meyers' deliciously scented (with essential oils, no less) earth-friendly, cruelty-free, hard-working line of cleaning products, this is your chance to find out what all the fuss is about.

In the Spring Cleaning Bucket Brigade contest, five winners (plus five of their friends) will be chosen each week - through April 27 - to win a bucket brimming with an assortment of aromatherapeutic cleaning supplies. And -- drawing on the inspiration of Mrs. Thelma A. Meyer’s garden and the community gardens in her hometown of Granger, Iowa -- the company is donating $1 per entry to the American Community Gardening Association (up to $10,000).

With scents like basil, bluebell, lavender, lemon verbena, geranium, rosemary, parsley, honeysuckle, and baby blossom, spring cleaning never smelled so sweet.
