Crowning Glory

MDG doesn't rush to cover fast food promotions, but her many ethical reservations were no match for a kid-friendly competition involving a crown, creativity, charity and a free trip to Legoland. McDonald’s may have its supersized Olympic marketing campaign, but Burger King’s got a brand new Design the Crown contest.C'mon!

From now through September 3, kids ages 6-12 are invited to create their very own custom crown at BKcrown.com for a chance to win a VIP family trip to LEGOLAND Park and be featured on the next BK Crown.

Throughout the promotion, kids (and adults too) can also enter secret BK crown codes to choose which charities – including Wildlife Conservation Society, National Parks Conservation Association, DonorsChoose.org and Have it Your Way Foundation – Burger King will support.

Mission Possible

Chase is at it again, giving away a ton of cash to small businesses across the country. With daily deal site LivingSocial as a partner, it’s got a whopping $3 million to divvy up among 12 lucky grant winners ($250,000 each!) during its Mission: Small Business promotion.

Warning: this one requires immediate action. Businesses need at least 250 votes before June 30 to be eligible for consideration. Click here to help a small business achieve a big mission

Home Again

The talented Tim McGraw, along with his beautiful (and also very talented) wife, Faith Hill, have done a ton to help people – especially children - in need since they formed Neighbor’s Keeper back in 2004. But this summer McGraw is turning his focus to veterans through his HomeFront program, giving away 25 mortgage-free houses to wounded or needy service members.  How awesome is that?

In case you’re wondering, the number of homes he’s donating isn’t random: it directly correlates with the number of stops he’s making during his “Brothers of the Sun” tour with Kenny Chesney. Don’t fret if your city isn’t on this summer’s tour schedule. With continued support from Chase and Operation Homefront, McGraw is working hard to give away even more homes in the future.  Learn more about this fantastic program at OperationHomefront.net.

No Bigger Cause

I hope that all of the programs and campaigns I write about here go some way towards making the world a better place, but this one asks for our help in preventing a calamity of unimaginable proportions.

Dr. Jill Biden, Geena Davis, Uma Thurman, Josh Hartnett and Chanel Iman are joining with USAID in a desperate fight against hunger in the Horn of Africa. Their new PSAs encourage Americans to text "GIVE" to 777444, a simple message that will direct a $10 donation to organizations that are trying to feed the more than 13 million people (a number greater than the populations of Los Angeles and New York City combined) who will only survive if they get emergency assistance.

The ads also ask that people spread the word and “FWD” this critical message to their friends and family. Click here to support humanitarian warriors including Catholic Relief Services, Mercy Corps, Save the Children, UNICEF USA, World Vision, World Food Program USA and CARE. It doesn't get any bigger than this.

In Praise of Mom

I’m happy to report that Olay is still accepting “mominations” for mothers who embody and inspire beauty, moms who are beautiful both inside and out.

Click here to declare and share your favorite mom photo and Olay will continue to donate its products (up to a million ounces) to Look Good… Feel Better, a national organization dedicated to improving the self-esteem and quality of life of women undergoing treatment for cancer.

Zero is the New Hero

I just received a reassuring text from my friends at UNICEF informing me that world leaders have just committed to achieve zero preventable deaths by 2035. Hurray, only 23 more years to go!

Anyway, the message also asked me to reply “ZERO” to pledge to stand with them (the leaders) and UNICEF. Of course, I immediately did just that. I’m sure you can go to UNICEF’s Web site and find out how you can join in on this important text conversation.

Charitees

You can find dozens of cute T-shirts on Threadless supporting all sorts of causes including the American Red Cross, World Alzheimer’s Month and UNICEF. But, my favorite is an empowering new tee from CARE with the design “A Mother is a Daughter is a Mother” by artist Shahaf Gurevich.

You can get yours here for $19.50 (men’s and women’s sizes), and thanks to a partnership with the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, you can rest assured that 100 percent of the proceeds from each sale will go to CARE’s work improving the health and education of women and children in developing countries.  Click here to help CARE fight poverty around the globe.

Grown in America

I won’t go into details about Michelle Obama’s new book, "American Grown," because I don't want to spoil it for you, but it's worth pointing out that 100 percent of the proceeds go to the National Park Foundation.

From what I could gather from the reviews so far, the First Lady’s 271-page tome dishes out healthy recipes from White House chefs, allows readers a peek inside community and school gardening projects across the nation, includes a comprehensive gardening guide by the chief WH horticulturalist and, of course, charts the growth of the 1600 Pennsylvania garden over the past three years (complete with colorful, glossy photos). Plus, I hear there are a few clever anecdotes from the president himself and tips from celebrities including Jay Leno, Grant Hill and Michelle Kwan.

Click here to gather your own copy of American Grown, help the National Park Foundation promote its gardening and healthy eating programs, and give young people the opportunity to experience the great outdoors.

Dialing for Dollars

Move over Facebook.  Pinterest is gaining more than a few friends with its new Move the Dial contest.  From June 4 through July 2, Dial Facebook friends will be urged (politely, of course) to create a board on Pinterest with pinned images that show how their favorite cause helps “move the dial” in their community.  Get it?

Whether it's rescuing animals, promoting literacy, cleaning up the environment or feeding the hungry, the boards will be used to nominate the top five causes that fans will vote on – beginning July 16 - to become Dial’s 2012 cause.  Oh, and the winning charity will receive a $5,000 donation.

Dial in to the contest at www.facebook.com/dial.
