Join the Hoopla

St. Jude’s impressive line-up of NBA ambassadors – including Pau Gasol, Marc Gasol, David Lee and Kevin Love - are teaming up with The V Foundation and ESPN to raise awareness and funds for the charity's lifesaving pediatric cancer research. Tune into the nationally televised games from now through March 4 to catch a new public service announcement that I’m assuming features at lease one of the aforementioned players. Maybe even all four.

You can also support the campaign by texting HOPE to 50333 or JIMMYV to 80888 or making a donation at www.stjude.org/hoops or www.jimmyv.org/nba. Give sick kids a shot at a better future here

Hats Off to Hands Off

Leonardo DiCaprio has joined the desperate fight to save some of the most wondrous creatures on earth. During his much-publicized break from the big screen, Leo's lending his voice, charisma, smarts and celebrity to WWF's new “Hands Off My Parts” animal rights initiative -- and urging us to sign a petition to end the illegal ivory trade in Thailand.

While elephants are butchered and pushed to the brink of extinction to satisfy demand for their tusks, rhinos and tigers are being killed for their skins, bones, horns and other body parts. Why? To make rugs, trinkets and bogus medicine.

If all of this makes your blood boil, click here to join the fight.

Be Bear Aware

I probably wouldn’t have gone with “last call” when announcing that the nomination period for its 2013 Build-A-Bear Workshop Huggable Heroes contest was coming to a close, but technically it is ending soon. Budding young do gooders have less than a week (February 28) to explain what they’re doing to save the world. Are they rescuing animals in need, fostering confidence and self esteem in teenage girls, recycling crayons or raising awareness about hunger?

This year ten young Huggable Heroes between the ages of eight and 18 will be granted $10,000 in scholarships and prizes, a donation to a charity of his or her choice and a trip to lovely St. Louis, home to some of the smartest bears on earth (aka BABW World Bearquarters).

Become the next huggable hero at buildabear.com/huggableheroes.

Nature is Calling

Get ready to be floored by the first blog post in the world to make carpet tiles compelling while using the term biophilia.

Gotcha. Right?

The “Reconnect Your Space” competition from Interface, which does a whole lot of great carpet stuff, invites you to submit architectural, interior or urban designs that bring to life a deep-seated love of nature. Otherwise known as biophilia. So know you know.

Outdoorsy students, teachers, architects and interior designers should enter their biophilic design at
interfaceconnect.com/competition before April 1, 2013.
Submissions can be in the form of a sketch, drawing or rendering, and should be accompanied by a description of no more than 500 words.

The grand-prize winner has the luxury of choosing where he or she would like to get up close and personal with biophilic design for four days and three nights in Singapore, San Francisco or Cornwall. How and where would you reconnect your space?

It's Time to Spay Up

If your pet has a unique brand of winning charm (yeah, they do), you should take a shot at the World Spay Day 2013 Pet Pageant -- a cherished annual awards ceremony and yet another reason to love the The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) and its vital spay/neuter program.

Consideration for the big prize, Miss or Mister World Spay Day, is free, while entrants in other categories including Best Smile, Best Hair and Most Photogenic are asked to contribute just $5.00. With prizes like personalized pet collars and $1,000 grants from HSUS, how could you NOT send in a shot?

Submit your best digital pic and a few cute perspectives -- like why your buddy makes your heart go pitter-patter and which of their bad habits drives you absolutely insane -- at the Spay Day site before March 15.

Go for Jeep

Jeep and the USO recently launched a new campaign called Operation S.A.F.E. Return to address the special needs of returning service men and women. You can show your support for the movement by sending -- what else -- a tweet sharing a story, photo or message of how you’ve lent, or plan to lend, a hand to our troops before May 27.
Each tweet with the hashtag #joinOSR will garner a $1 donation from the American-made carmaker. Click here to join the USO on its march to raise $1 million in funding and vehicles, and help military members and their families re-acclimate to civilian life.

PSA Today

This week, NBC's TODAY show is running a weeklong series, “Today Takes Action,” featuring personal public service announcements from its unimpeachable roster of anchors (if you can't trust Al Roker, you can't trust anyone).

I have it on good authority (an NBC press release) that each of the early risers carefully selected a cause close to their heart. Matt Lauer stumps for
fatherhood involvement. Savannah Guthrie urges us to join the fight against hunger. Al is promoting emergency preparedness and Natalie Morales advocates for a favorite MDG issue, shelter pet adoption

With support from the Ad Council, all of the ads were created pro bono by top ad agencies across the country. Two even contain voiceovers by famous actors. Lend your support TODAY.

Saks Love Your Cause

If you’ve got a Saks Fifth Avenue credit card at your beck and call, you might consider doing a bit of good with it throughout the month of February. The luxury retailer is partnering with the American Red Cross for its Saks Loves Your Cause initiative, giving 5% of all registered purchases - made with the card - to charity.

For the second straight year, Saks is allowing customers to select which local charity they wish to support (in addition to the American Red Cross, of course) from a select list of organizations including Citizens for Animal Protection (Houston, TX), the Boys & Girls Club (Greenwich, CT), and Opportunity Village (Las Vegas). Saks.com is also taking part in the program, with 5% of online purchases made using a Saks card to benefit the Red Cross.

Click here for more information about how Saks can help your cause and how you can help theirs.
